CSIC (Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas) is the largest public multidisciplinary research organisation in Spain. Its mission is to promote, coordinate, develop, and disseminate multidisciplinary scientific and technological research to contribute to economic, social, and cultural development. It has a staff of more than 10.000 employees, including more than 3200 scientists. CSIC has 126 Institutes or Centres in Spain and a delegation in Brussels. CSIC has considerable experience in both participating and managing RTD projects. Under the 6th Framework Programme (FP), CSIC signed 418 contracts (37 as coordinators) and it is the 5th organisation in Europe in project execution and funding. Under the 7th FP, CSIC has signed 280 projects , 5 of them as coordinator. One of the most outstanding CSIC Research Centres in robotics is the Instituto de Automatica Industrial (IAI), which has as a major goal to carry out RTD regarding the analysis, design and synthesis of automatic control systems and robotics. CSIC-IAI group has already managed, as co-ordinator, three research Projects at European programmes such as: (INCO-Copernicus Project 960054), (ESPRIT 02/76100) and (GRD1-1999-11153).

Role in the project

The main tasks of the CSIC-CAR group for the project are: to act as the Co-ordinator, to take care of the scientific and technical quality of the results, to develop the mission manager, to participate in the development of the perception system, new actuators, system integration, management and exploitation.
